Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in McAdenville, NC. Whether it's for drug or alcohol detection, our specialty lies in hair analysis, with facilities across every city nationwide to administer these tests. Typically, hair lengths of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body are required. Such analyses can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific hair testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug assessments have gained favor as a sought-after method. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists are increasingly opting for hair analysis over the traditional urine approach. Organizations with strict no-drug policies, judicial bodies, and those monitoring probation often rely on hair testing. Its key advantage is the extended drug use detection capability, spanning 90 days, collected under observation, making evasion nearly impossible. For the detection of substances used in the past 5 days, urine tests still remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a highly effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a lengthy record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the growing strand. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can offer up to a roughly 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising about 200 strands of hair (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for tests and confirmations. For EtG, add-ons, and/or screens beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is preferred. We advise weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it refers solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes every other hair type (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The main procedures involved in processing a drug test result in a laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the primary processing of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This covers verifying the sealing and proper shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid check for substance abuse. While Screening serves as a budget-friendly means for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive outcome requires confirmation to be valid in a judicial setting. Any samples initially positive in Screening do need a follow-up confirmation.

If Screening shows a sample as positive, more hair from the initial collection is needed and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are obtained from hair at lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is considered the toughest method to execute.

Confirmation of positive Screening results is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Any samples deemed positive are cleaned before further confirmation if necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter duration for detection.
  • High resistance to tampering: It is quite challenging to falsify a hair drug test, making the outcomes more reliable.
  • Shows historical usage: It can reveal a pattern of usage over time, rather than just recent drug use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: It takes roughly 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing avenues.
  • Results may vary: Elements such as hair pigmentation and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Even though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the evaluation focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle within the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
