Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Micro, North Carolina. Whether you require testing for drug or alcohol use, we specialize in hair testing nationwide. Most testing relies on having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair available from the head or body. These tests can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or any other specialized requirements.

Recently, the popularity of hair follicle drug testing has surged among employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts, favoring it over urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial entities, and those overseeing probation prefer this method. Its extended detection span, often reaching up to 90 days, is significantly longer and harder to circumvent. Yet, urine tests remain preferred for detecting recent substance use, under five days.

What it is, How it works

Seen as a robust method, hair testing is a crucial means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair, by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of its growing strand, holds a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can offer roughly up to a three-month detection timeframe for substances. It's easy to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

Taking a 1.5-inch piece of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will achieve 100mg of hair, an optimal sample amount for both screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, add-ons, and/or more than 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. It's best to measure the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair applies to all other types (such as facial or axillary hair, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary four phases for processing a drug test result in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the introductory integration of a sample into the lab's system. This stage verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes other needed data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody setup.

Performing a quick preliminary drug check, Screening serves as an economical means to exclude drug usage in most samples, yet a positive result must undergo confirmation to be legally acceptable. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening call for additional confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity during the Screening stage, more hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. Drugs are withdrawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in alternate methods (like urine or oral fluid), highlighting hair drug testing as a challenging methodology.

Confirming any positive screening outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. As needed, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation. The comprehensive lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation requirements.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Compared to urine tests, hair drug tests reveal drug use for up to 90 days.
  • Hard to manipulate: Its high resistance to tampering renders a hair drug test’s results more dependable.
  • Delivers historical insight: It shows not only recent use but also a timeline of drug consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection: Detecting drugs in hair can take roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur a higher cost compared to other methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Hair color and individual hair growth factors can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Tests frequently termed as "hair follicle tests" actually analyze the strand, not the sub-scalp follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The choice between hair follicle and urine tests can define the accuracy of results. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
