Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Mountain View, North Carolina. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in such services, boasting facilities across all U.S. cities to conduct hair testing. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is generally required on the head or body for the test. Hair samples can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent recently in the realm of drug screenings. Various employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. This preference arises because hair tests are used by entities enforcing strict drug-free policies to monitor individuals. A key advantage of such tests is an extended detection period of up to 90 days, conducted under scrutiny, making it tough to manipulate results. Meanwhile, urine tests remain superior for recent drug use with a 5-day detection window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and drug use. Hair specimens collected near the scalp can reveal drug or alcohol use over a period extending up to roughly three months. Hair sampling is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches in length, comprising around 200 hair strands (approximating the width of a #2 pencil), and closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, additional analyses, or screenings exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is suggested. Using a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen is advisable. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be utilized. In reference to head hair, we imply scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This step verifies that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any supplementary data entry not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial swift assessment for prohibited drugs. Although cost-effective, Screening requires confirmation for legal admissibility if a positive result is obtained. Presumptively positive samples during Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positives during Screening, further hair from the original specimen is extracted for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are removed from hair at lower concentrations than found in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing particularly challenging.

The Confirmation of any positive Screening result relies on techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Positive samples undergo washing prior to Confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation in compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use over a span of up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection range.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is highly improbable, ensuring higher accuracy in results.
  • Historical insight: It reveals drug consumption patterns over time rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: Detecting drugs in hair takes around 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur greater costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Influences such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
