Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair drug testing services in Myrtle Grove, North Carolina. Whether you need a test for drugs or alcohol, we specialize in hair analysis and offer testing centers across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method for drug screening. Employers, legal institutions, and substance abuse experts increasingly favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are critical for employers with strict no-drug policies and for monitoring individuals on probation. The main advantage is their extended detection window of up to 90 days, near-impossible evasion, and observed collection process. For drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination is increasingly acknowledged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can showcase a prolonged timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers up to a nearly 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to gather, moderately hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample amount for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, supplemental tests, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It is recommended to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it pertains only to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The main phases in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the lab's database. This process includes checking if the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not provided by a digital chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening serves as a cost-efficient way to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive result demands confirmation for it to be acceptable in legal settings. Any samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For samples that test tentatively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this stage, substances are extracted from the hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug Screening is the most intricate methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentative positive samples undergo washing before confirmation, as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Cheating is highly challenging: It is extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can unveil a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot recognize recent consumption: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result disparities: Differences such as hair color and unique individual hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the examination analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
