Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Newland, North Carolina. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with testing facilities available in cities across the nation. Hair from the crown of the head or body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, is typically required, and can be screened for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom test options.

Recently, drug testing increasingly includes hair follicle analysis. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer this over standard urine tests. Hair tests are favored by zero-tolerance policy employers, courts, and probationers. Its primary advantage is a longer drug detection window—up to 90 days—observed during sample collection, making it nearly impossible to tamper. For detecting drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

The evaluation of hair has become recognized as a robust means for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a prolonged timeline of alcohol and other substances by capturing markers within the fibers of the lengthening hair strand. When procured near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month detection span for alcohol and other substances. Hair is uncomplicated to collect, relatively hard to adulterate, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent volume of body hair may be gathered. By head hair, we imply scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result generally consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial processing of a sample into a lab's system. This step entails verifying that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid check for substance abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample yields a preliminary positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence hair drug screening is the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating in a hair drug test is highly challenging, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Delivers historical insights: It offers patterns of substance use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to be discernible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Diversity in results: Elements like hair hue and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
