Employment, Court Ordered, Probation, Family

Located in Northwest, North Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our company excels in hair analysis, supported by our nationwide network of testing centers. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be tailored for other specific testing needs.

In recent times, the preference for hair follicle drug tests has increased among employers, courts, and substance abuse experts over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, the judicial system, and for those on probation. The main advantage lies in the extensive 90-day detection window provided by hair tests, which are securely collected, minimizing manipulation. However, for detecting substances used in the past 5 days, urine testing remains the most accurate method.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have emerged as an effective mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands. When extracted near the scalp, hair samples can offer an approximately 90-day detection period for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, making it challenging to tamper with, and the samples are straightforward to transport.

A segment measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hairs (equivalent to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for assessment and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels beyond 10, 150mg of hair is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't an option, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (beard, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal procedures in laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the preliminary incorporation of a sample into the laboratory system. This step verifies proper sealing and shipment of the sample, the assignment of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completion of any manual data input not captured by electronic custody systems.

Screening conducts an initial rapid assessment for drug use. While Screening offers a cost-effective means to exclude drug use in most cases, a positive result requires confirmation to be suitable for legal proceedings. Any specimens with presumptive positives in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Should a specimen test presumptively positive during Screening, additional strands are taken from the initial batch and readied for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), underscoring the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Confirming any positive findings from Screening involves techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All specimens with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accredited according to ISO / IEC 17025 requirements.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection period: Hair assessments can pinpoint drug use up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests with shorter periods.
  • Low susceptibility to tampering: Cheating a hair drug analysis is considerably difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers chronological data: It outlines a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent activities.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become noticeable in hair approximately 5-7 days following use.
  • Expense: Hair assessments tend to be pricier than other drug analysis techniques.
  • Variability in results: Elements like hair pigment and personal discrepancies in hair growth might influence metabolite concentrations.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle evaluations", the analysis focuses on the hair shaft rather than the follicular unit beneath the surface

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Northwest, NC, hair follicle testing shines compared to traditional urine tests. Its primary advantage is superior detection accuracy. While urine tests have a shorter detection window, hair tests can detect drug use over a longer period, providing more reliable insight into substance history. This increased accuracy makes hair testing the preferred choice in various settings.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Northwest, NC, offers an extended detection window up to 90 days, making it an invaluable tool for employers. This test provides a comprehensive understanding of an individual's substance use history, presenting a broader picture compared to other testing methods. The extended window highlights the effectiveness of hair testing in offering in-depth insights.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One significant advantage of hair follicle tests in Northwest, NC, is their tamper-resistant nature. This method greatly reduces the likelihood of sample adulteration, ensuring the results are both reliable and unquestionable. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
