In Oak Ridge, North Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. Whether it's for drugs or alcohol, our centers across the nation offer specialized hair analysis. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is generally required, whether from the head or body. Hair assessments can detect various drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other customizable options.

The inclination towards hair follicle drug testing has increased, with various employers, courts, and substance professionals preferring it over urine samples. Used by zero-tolerance policy employers, courts, and probation scenarios, the key advantage is its ability to detect drug use over a period of up to 90 days, collected through observed procedures, making cheating almost improbable. However, for recent use within five days, urine tests are still the go-to.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair, it offers a substantial historical record of substance use. Sampling hair near the scalp can provide insights into alcohol and drug consumption for up to a 3-month period. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A sample composed of 1.5 inches, roughly 200 hair strands (approximately equal to the thickness of a #2 pencil), near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, considered ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG analyses, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample volume of 150mg is preferred. We advise measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When referencing head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s system, which involves confirming proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and finishing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody procedure.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an affordable means to negate drug usage in most cases, a positive screen requires confirmation for court admissibility. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug screening is notoriously challenging.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result occurs using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter detection span.
  • Reduced likelihood of cheating: Due to its complexity, it's largely resistant to tampering, ensuring result accuracy.
  • Offers usage history: It can showcase a drug use trend over time, beyond merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color or individual growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests," the actual analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests in Oak Ridge, NC, reveals superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests showcase a longer detection window, chronicling drug use more effectively, whereas urine tests offer limited time frames. This difference underscores the in-depth analysis capability of hair testing.

Employers in Oak Ridge favor hair testing as it provides a comprehensive history of substance use. In contrast, urine tests, although useful for recent detection, fall short in offering a broad overview of historical drug use.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Oak Ridge, NC, is notable. Hair samples can reveal drug use over periods extending up to 90 days, as opposed to the shorter windows associated with other testing methods. This offers employers a full view of an individual's substance history.

Employers benefit from this expansive window, as it helps in assessing long-term behavior patterns, providing an extensive timeline of potential substance use. Such detailed insight is invaluable in maintaining workplace safety and reliability.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Oak Ridge, NC, minimizes tampering risks. The nature of this testing method ensures that results remain reliable and unquestioned. Unlike other methods that may fall prey to adulteration, hair tests maintain sample integrity effectively.

Preventing adulteration, hair tests in Oak Ridge offer peace of mind by safeguarding the authenticity of results. This resistance to tampering makes hair follicle testing an ideal solution for critical assessment needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
