Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Ocracoke, North Carolina. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our specialization lies in hair testing, with testing centers across all US cities ready to conduct these tests. Individuals typically need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from their scalp or body. Hair tests can screen for substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity in drug screening methods. Various employers, legal courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationary situations utilize these tests. Their main advantage is an extended detection window of up to 90 days, requiring direct observation and being nearly tamper-proof. However, urine tests remain more effective for immediate drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair strands capture biomarkers in their fibers, providing a prolonged history of substance use. Sampling hair close to the scalp can yield a detection window of up to approximately three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. Measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale is suggested. If scalp hair is not obtainable, a comparable amount of body hair is viable. In context, head hair indicates scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of drug tests comprises four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning initiates sample processing within a laboratory’s system. This step includes verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary assessment for drug abuse. Though Screening is an economical methodology to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive result needs confirmation to be defensible in legal settings. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

For samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Any positive screening outcome is confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples with presumptive positive results are washed prior to confirmation. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory procedure adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a narrower detection timeframe.
  • Difficult to manipulate: The accuracy of hair drug tests is higher due to the challenges in evading these tests.
  • Provides usage history: It presents a pattern of drug consumption over time, not only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicles beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
