Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Patterson Springs, North Carolina. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialization in hair testing is unparalleled, with centers nationwide equipped to perform these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are necessary. Our hair tests can measure drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific testing needs.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle drug tests. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse counselors prefer these over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are essential for employers with zero-tolerance policies, court requirements, and probationary individuals. They offer a significantly prolonged detection window for drug use, up to 90 days, and involve a supervised collection process which is hard to manipulate. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a potent instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended insight into alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can deliver an approximate 3-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional markers, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is preferred. It is advisable to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not an option, an equivalent portion of body hair may be used. Reference to head hair pertains solely to scalp hair. The term body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four pivotal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a specimen into a laboratory's system. This involves confirming the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen mandates confirmation for court acceptance. Any samples that appear positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample appear positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower levels than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating positivity are cleansed prior to confirmation as required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation plus the accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: It's incredibly tough to tamper with a hair drug test, ensuring the results are more credible.
  • Offers historical insights: It can illustrate a pattern of drug activity over time, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent activity: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and personal variations in growth can impact the measure of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis itself is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
