Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Pikeville, North Carolina. If a hair or alcohol test is needed, our specialty in hair testing comes to the fore, with facilities available across cities nationwide to conduct them. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or body are used. These tests are versatile, covering drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

In recent times, drug testing methodologies have increasingly leaned towards hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer these over traditional urine tests. Companies with zero-tolerance drug policies, judiciary, and probation programs utilize hair tests. The extended detection window, observed collection process, and near-immunity to tampering are significant benefits. However, to screen recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is perceived as a potent resource for detecting drug and alcohol usage. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the expanding hair strand, hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and drug consumption. Hair obtained near the scalp can extend up to a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, tampering is somewhat challenging, and shipping is convenient.

A sample size of 1.5 inches containing roughly 200 hair strands near the scalp produces 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels surpassing 10, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We advocate for using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen's weight. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair may be gathered. The term "head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory goes through four principal steps when processing a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the initial handling of a sample occurs within the lab system. This step verifies the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a quick initial assessment for drug misuse. Though it's a cost-effective method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result in Screening requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo a second confirmation.

If the Screening stage indicates a presumptively positive result, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are separated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging process to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS confirms any positive Screening outcomes. All samples evidencing presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the complete lab process is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage reaching up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to falsify: Ensuring more precise results, it is substantially hard to manipulate a hair drug test.
  • Traces historical usage: It demonstrates a drug use pattern over time, not just current consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate use: It generally takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing practices.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can affect drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often dubbed as "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Prevails Over Urine Testing in Pikeville, NC lies in its unparalleled detection accuracy. Hair testing captures a broader drug history, making it a superior choice for employers and legal entities. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
