Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Pinnacle, North Carolina. Whether you require a hair-based drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area, featuring centers ready to conduct tests across all major cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the head or body to perform most tests. These hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate other tailored testing requirements.

In recent times, conducting drug tests has increasingly involved the use of hair follicle analysis. Various employers, judiciary systems, and Substance Abuse experts now favor hair exams over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle screenings are preferred by employers with rigid no-drug use mandates, the judiciary, and individuals under probation. A key advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection timeline, reaching up to 90 days post-use, coupled with an observed collection approach, making tampering nearly impossible. Yet, for drug detection within the past 5 days, urine analysis remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a robust method for pinpointing drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use over an approximate three-month period. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's width) near the scalp ensures 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's recommended to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equal portion of body hair can be gathered. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in laboratory processing of drug test outcomes are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory system. This step ensures the sample's sealed and proper shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid check for substances of abuse. Although Screening efficiently excludes substance use in most samples, positive screenings need confirmation for legal admissibility. Any Screening-presumptive positives demand further confirmation.

For samples presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and processed for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lesser concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis a challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any Screening-positive result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive specimens undergo necessary cleansing before confirmation. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use up to 90 days back, whereas urine tests have a narrower detection range.
  • Difficulty in manipulation: Hair tests are challenging to deceive, ensuring more credible results.
  • Supplies cumulative data: It offers an extended overview of substance usage over time, beyond just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent usage: Drugs typically require 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments usually cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair development can modify drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", these actually assess the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
