Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Poplar, North Carolina. If a hair-based drug or alcohol screen is needed, our specialization in hair tests allows us to conduct them at centers located nationwide, including all cities. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is necessary for testing. Hair analysis is used for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized hair test options.

Over the past few years, the inclusion of hair follicle drug tests in drug screening has increased significantly. Many employers, judicial institutions, and substance abuse experts opt for hair drug tests instead of traditional urine tests. Organizations with strict drug policies, courts, and those on probation routinely choose hair follicle assessments. Key advantages include a longer drug use detection window of up to 90 days, conducted under observation, and highly resistant to tampering. Yet, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations are now recognized as a significant means for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and various substances by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When gathered adjacent to the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and substances. Hair is effortless to gather, moderately challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For the EtG addon and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair may be obtained. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Main Steps

The four primary steps in the lab processing of a drug examination result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This encompasses confirming that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a non-sequential LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody platform.

Screening comprises an initial swift verification for substances of abuse. Though Screening is a budget-friendly approach to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be permissible in court. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening indeed require further confirmation.

In the event a sample is tentatively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, substances are isolated from hair at a considerably lower concentration than in alternate methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most intricate methodology to execute.

Awaiting any positive screening outcome is substantiated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All ostensibly positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the endorsement to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug analyses can identify substance use for up to 90 days, compared to urine analyses which hold a shorter detection span.
  • Low likelihood of deception: It is highly challenging to deceive a hair drug analysis, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can display a trend of substance use over time, not merely recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot discern recent usage: It necessitates about 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses tend to be pricier than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result deviations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth may impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Observation: Often referred to as "hair follicle analyses", the examination itself scrutinizes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Poplar, NC, hair follicle drug testing surpasses urine tests by offering enhanced accuracy and reliability. While urine tests provide a short detection window, hair tests can identify substance use up to 90 days later. This extensive period allows a broader understanding of an individual’s drug use history, presenting a complete picture that urine tests often miss due to their limited range.

The precision of hair testing ensures that even the smallest traces of drug use are detected, while traditional urine tests might miss vital information. For employers and institutions in Poplar demanding uncompromised accuracy, hair follicle testing delivers consistent reliability, mitigating risks associated with false negatives which are more common in urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

With an extended detection window of up to 90 days, hair follicle testing in Poplar, NC offers a comprehensive insight into an individual's drug use history. Unlike urine tests, which generally cover the past few days, hair tests encapsulate a three-month spectrum of substance activity, providing a thorough evaluation.

For employers evaluating potential or current staff, the lengthened timeframe of hair testing unveils consistent substance use patterns, offering a powerful tool for assessing long-term behaviors. This extensive observation period ensures more informed hiring and monitoring practices, granting a substantial advantage over more limited testing methods.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Poplar, NC stands out as a tamper-resistant method, significantly curtailing the chances of test adulteration. Unlike urine tests, which can be susceptible to manipulation, hair tests provide unquestionable reliability in results, ensuring confidence in findings.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
