Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Princeton, North Carolina. If a hair drug or alcohol test is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair testing with facilities in cities across the nation capable of conducting these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the scalp or can be taken from the body. These tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become the preferred method for conducting drug screenings. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests appeal to employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, judiciary systems, and individuals under probation. Their main advantage is the extended detection timeframe, lasting up to 90 days, ensuring a tightly monitored collection process, making cheating nearly impossible. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, a urine test remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

The recognition of hair testing as a formidable method for identifying drug and alcohol intake has grown significantly. Hair offers an extensive timeline of alcohol and drug consumption by encapsulating biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair samples can reveal alcohol and drug usage for up to three months. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively tamper-resistant, and conveniently transportable.

Gathering a 1.5-inch sample comprising roughly 200 hair strands (about the width of a standard pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for initial and confirmatory analysis. For EtG enhancements or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It is recommended to measure the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers exclusively to hair from the scalp, while "body hair" encompasses all other types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the laboratory handling of a drug test: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the initial stage, integrating a sample into the laboratory’s workflow. This phase includes ensuring the sample’s proper sealing and delivery, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any outstanding data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening offers an expedited preliminary check for substances of abuse. While it presents a budget-friendly option to exclude drug usage for most samples, any positive results during Screening must be verified for legal admissibility. Those samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

Should a sample return a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial submission and prepared for Extraction. At this juncture, drug compounds are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive outcomes from Screening are authenticated using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positive results undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory journey from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated in accordance with both the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection span: Hair tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests, which offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Falsification difficulty: The challenge of deceiving a hair test renders the results more trustworthy.
  • Retrospective data: These tests offer a timeline of drug consumption over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Absence of immediate detection: Drugs become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair testing is usually costlier than other methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair shade and personal hair growth diversity can influence the presence of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly described as "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand and does not involve the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Princeton, NC, hair follicle testing outshines traditional urine tests by offering superior detection accuracy and reliability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
