Accredited Drug Testing offers a comprehensive hair follicle drug testing service in Providence, North Carolina. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair assessments, with facilities available in cities across the nation to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can suffice. A variety of substances, such as drugs, alcohol/ETG, can be detected through customized hair tests.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has gained traction in drug testing practices. This method is increasingly recommended by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts over the conventional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal entities, and probationary services. The test's main advantage is its extended detection period for drugs, providing insights into use for up to 90 days, following a supervised collection method, making it virtually cheat-proof. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly viewed as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended history by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers during growth. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol usage over a roughly 3-month timeframe. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section containing around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil size) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. The specimen's weight should be verified using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug test results involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step where a sample is entered into the lab’s system. This procedure includes ensuring proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN) randomly, and filling in any data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial, rapid assessment for drug presence. Although Screening can economically eliminate drug usage in most samples, any positive result must be corroborated to be court-eligible. Samples that are presumptively positive require additional confirmation.

If a sample appears positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing particularly challenging.

To confirm any positive screening results, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is used. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The whole lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter duration for detection.
  • Difficulty to deceive: The accuracy of hair drug tests is due to the difficulty of manipulation.
  • Long-term data: It delivers a timeline of drug use over an extended duration, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Inconsistent results: The concentration of drug metabolites in hair can be influenced by hair color and individual growth variances.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the examination targets the hair strand rather than the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
