Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Ramseur, NC. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol testing, our centers nationwide, including those in your city, are equipped to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body will suffice. Hair samples are examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair analysis options.

Nowadays, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common choice for screening. Employers, as well as judicial systems, and substance abuse experts, are increasingly favoring hair tests over the traditional urine tests. Firms with strict drug policies, courts, and probation programs often employ hair follicle tests for their extended detection period of up to 90 days. The tests are observed, reducing the chances of cheating, although urine tests remain ideal for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively tough to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment encompassing around 200 hair strands (akin to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will supply 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a recommendation of 150mg of the sample is given. Using a jeweler’s scale is suggested for weighing the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair may be obtained. Specifically, when we mention head hair, we mean only scalp hair. In contrast, body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial intake of a sample into a laboratory’s systems. This process checks that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data input not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for illicit drug presence. Although Screening is a cost-efficient manner to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be considered valid in legal settings. Any specimens that show presumptive positives during Screening require a confirmatory analysis.

For samples indicated as presumptive positives in Screening, additional hair is drawn from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are separated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity of conducting hair drug screening.

Confirming any positive screening outcome is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples with presumptive positives are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the full laboratory procedure is scrutinized in line with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have comparatively shorter detection periods.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is exceedingly challenging to evade a hair drug test, reinforcing the accuracy of the results.
  • Delivers historical context: It can illustrate a pattern of drug consumption over time, extending beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable within the hair.
  • Higher expenses: Hair drug tests usually incur greater costs compared to alternate drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color or personal discrepancies in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug byproducts in the hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the examination actually analyzes the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
