Offering thorough hair follicle drug testing in Raynham, NC, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for hair drug or alcohol investigations. With centers across all U.S. cities, we ensure comprehensive testing services. Ideally, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair available, either on the head or body. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for specific needs.

The prevalence of hair follicle drug tests has risen in recent times, becoming a preferred method for many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals over standard urine tests. Hair tests serve employers enforcing zero-tolerance, the judicial process, and probationary terms due to their long detection window, often up to 90 days, their observed application, and resistance to tampering. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most reliable for drug use within a 5-day frame.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the growing strands. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to ship.

A sample of 1.5 inches with around 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is preferred. It's advised to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. 'Head hair' specifically refers to scalp hair, while 'body hair' includes all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary incorporation of a sample into the lab's system, ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and mailed, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any data entry missing from the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial, quick examination for abused drugs. Though an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive result in Screening requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples showing presumptive positives at this stage necessitate further confirmation.

If Screening shows presumptive positivity, additional hair is extracted for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are separated from hair at lower concentrations than in other methods (like urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening highly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating presumptive positives undergo a necessary wash before confirmation. The complete laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection duration.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are challenging to deceive, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It depicts a pattern of drug consumption over a duration rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can alter drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicles beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
