Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing in Rennert, North Carolina. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities available in every city Nationwide to conduct such tests. Usually, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary from the head or body. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other hair testing requirements.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for drug detection. Increasingly, employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals favor hair drug tests over traditional urine samples. This test appeals to employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation services. The main advantage is the extended drug detection window of up to 90 days, with direct observation during collection deterring manipulation. However, urine tests remain superior for detecting drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a detailed history of alcohol and drug intake by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to around a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of around 200 hair strands (similar to the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, additional substances, or over 10 panels, 150mg of sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. Note that when mentioning head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result comprises four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is integrated into a laboratory's system. This phase ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry that the electronic chain of custody system does not cover.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid test for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed to be legally acceptable. Samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower levels compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation, as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to circumvent: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, thus ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It presents a drug use trend over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the amount of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Often referred to as "hair follicle tests", these assessments analyze the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Compared to urine tests, hair follicle testing offers superior benefits in Rennert, NC. The efficiency of hair testing outshines traditional methods due to its extensive detection period and difficulty to tamper with. While urine tests might only identify recent substance use, hair tests detect usage over months, providing a more comprehensive view of an individual's habits and ensuring reliable results.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Rennert, NC, reveals drug use over a significant time frame, capturing evidence of consumption up to 90 days prior. This extensive detection window allows employers to gain a deep understanding of an applicant’s or employee’s substance history, ensuring a thorough evaluation that previous drug testing methods couldn't achieve, enhancing workplace safety.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Rennert, NC, hair follicle tests are designed to substantially reduce the likelihood of sample manipulation. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
