Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Rockford, North Carolina. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing and operates facilities in cities across the nation capable of conducting a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head's crown or body can be used, allowing testing for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

Over the past years, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug-use rules, judicial systems, and probationary programs utilize hair follicle drug tests. The key advantage of a hair follicle test is its extended detection window, typically reaching up to 90 days, ensuring a thorough and observable collection. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has increasingly been viewed as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When extracted near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection timeline for alcohol and various drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, add-ons, and/or procedures exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is preferable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for accurate measurement of the sample weight. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. When head hair is mentioned, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the laboratory handling of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab's system, which entails verifying proper sealing and shipment of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any supplementary data not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a quick preliminary assessment for the presence of drugs. While Screening is a cost-effective means to exclude drug consumption in most samples, a confirmed positive screening is necessary for court admissibility. Any initially positive results in Screening mandate a subsequent confirmation.

If the Screening indicates a presumptive positive result, additional hair is taken from the original sample for the Extraction phase. At this stage, drugs are extracted from the hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is regarded as the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technology. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation where necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is supervised under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is highly difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides historical data: It indicates drug use trends over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
