In Rockwell, North Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Our company excels in hair-based drug and alcohol tests, with centers throughout the nation, including Rockwell. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to specific requirements through customized testing.

Lately, drug testing procedures are increasingly incorporating the hair follicle method. This shift is due to the preference of many employers, judicial authorities, and substance abuse counselors for hair tests over urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, legal courts, and those on probation often choose this test. A key advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, paired with an observed collection process that minimizes chances of tampering. Nevertheless, for recent drug use within five days, urine testing remains highly precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments are now viewed as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair can capture a timeline spanning months for detecting alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biochemical markers within the hair strand as it grows. When extracted near the scalp, it offers a detection period of approximately three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion comprising roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil's width) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred sample for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding ten, a specimen volume of 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is suggested. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent body hair amount may be used. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other categories (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in processing a drug test result at the laboratory: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into a lab system. This step ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any leftover data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid test for drug abuse. Although Screening is cost-effective for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be legally sound. Presumptive positive samples in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should Screening indicate a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine, oral fluid), marking hair drug screening as the most challenging method to execute.

Verification of any positive result from Screening occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumptively positive undergo pre-confirmation washing if needed. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed per the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair label and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to bypass: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, thus more reliable results are ensured.
  • Offers historical insights: It indicates drug use patterns over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests involve higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variances: Elements like hair color and personal growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite the common term "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually involves the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
