Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Ruth, North Carolina. For those needing drug or alcohol screening via hair, our expertise lies in this area, with centers nationwide ready to assist. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. Our tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific needs.

Hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly common in recent years, replacing standard urine screenings. Preferred by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers, these tests offer an extended detection period of up to 90 days, an observed collection, and are tamper-proof. Though urine tests remain the best for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands chronicle long-term drug and alcohol history by embedding biomarkers within the hair fiber matrix. When cut near the scalp, this hair offers a potential detection window of roughly 3 months for alcohol and drug presence. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to dispatch.

A hair segment measuring 1.5 inches, composed of approximately 200 strands (akin to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, the standard specimen for screening and corroboration. For tests involving EtG, additional elements, and/or exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It is advisable to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a proportional volume of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, it exclusively denotes scalp hair. All other kinds represent body hair (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test incorporates four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary processing of a specimen within a lab’s system. This phase includes ensuring the specimen was properly sealed and dispatched, allocating an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input absent from an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for illicit substances. While Screening provides a budget-friendly method to exclude drug use in most samples, a confirmed positive is required for legal proceedings. Samples with presumptive positive results during Screening demand subsequent confirmation.

Once a sample yields a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this process, drugs are removed from hair at concentrations substantially lower than those detected through alternative means (e.g., urine or oral fluids), rendering hair drug assessments challenging.

Any positive outcomes from Screening are validated using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary before confirmation. The complete lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is vetted under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and certified under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug analyses can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine analyses offer a shorter window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It evidences drug use patterns over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days post-use to be detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing is costlier relative to other drug assessment methods.
  • Variations in results: Drug metabolite concentrations in hair can be affected by factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" commonly describes these tests, yet the analysis focuses on hair strands, not the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
