At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Saint James, North Carolina. Whether it's a hair drug or alcohol test you require, our specialty lies in hair assessments. With testing centers across every city Nationwide, we're equipped to conduct hair tests at your convenience. Typically, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head's crown or body suffices for these tests, which can evaluate substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Of late, the go-to method for drug screening increasingly involves hair follicle drug tests. This is a shift embraced by employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts who prefer it over the conventional urine tests. Hair follicle drug assessments are particularly favored by employers with stringent no-drug policies, the courts, and those on probation. Their principal advantage is an extended drug detection window, generally up to 90 days, conducted under direct supervision, and they're nearly immune to tampering. Nonetheless, when evaluating recent drug intake (within five days), urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. It provides extended insight into substance usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. If sampled near the scalp, hair can offer a substance detection span of up to three months. The collection process for hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (equivalent in width to a no. 2 pencil) taken nearest the scalp provides the ideal 100mg needed for testing. For EtG, additional screenings, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample weighing 150mg is advised. It is suggested to use a jeweler's scale for accuracy. In cases where scalp hair is absent, a similar amount of body hair can be gathered. "Head hair" pertains solely to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results comprises four stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a test sample into a lab's database. This involves confirming the sample was properly sealed and transported, issuing a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any manual data entry omitted by an automated chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary inspection for drug abuse signs. While cost-effective for eliminating drug use in most samples, any positive results in Screening must be verified for legal acceptability. Samples testing positive in Screening undergo additional confirmation.

For samples testing positive during Screening, further hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. During this phase, drug substances are separated from hair at lower concentrations than other methods such as urine or oral fluid tests, making hair drug analysis notably challenging.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are used for confirming any positive Screening outcomes. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The full testing cycle from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can identify substance use up to 90 days prior, surpassing urine tests which have shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are challenging to deceive, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers usage patterns: They reveal drug habits over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • No recent use detection: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug evaluations usually cost more than alternative drug tests.
  • Result variance: Factors such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the assessment is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
