Accredited Drug Testing offers a comprehensive range of hair follicle drug testing services in Salemburg, NC. For those requiring hair-based drug or alcohol testing, our company specializes in this method with numerous testing centers nationwide equipped for hair tests. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is typically necessary on the head's crown, but body hair can also be used in many situations. Hair tests are suitable for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specified substances.

Over the past few years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly replaced traditional methods. Employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists now often mandate hair testing over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are preferred due to their efficacy by employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probation services. A key advantage is its extended detection window, covering up to 90 days, with collection processes designed to prevent tampering. Nonetheless, to detect recent drug activity within 5 days, urine tests remain the preferred choice for accurate results.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair offers an extended history of substance use. When collected near the scalp, it provides a detection window for alcohol and drugs of up to three months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample comprising roughly 200 strands (equivalent to the size of a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. We advocate weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair can't be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair imply scalp hair only, whereas body hair includes facial, axillary, and other types.

Process Overview

The four key steps in the lab processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step includes verifying that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening performs a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although cost-effective for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be court-admissible. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

For samples testing positive in Screen, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. At this stage, substances are extracted at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair testing one of the most challenging methodologies.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed if required before confirmation. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, falls under the review of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection time: Hair tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: The difficulty in cheating a hair drug test makes the results more reliable.
  • Chronicles historical use: It reveals a pattern of substance use over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair tests are generally pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Hair color and individual hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", they analyze the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
