Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Saxapahaw, North Carolina. If hair drug or alcohol analysis is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair assessments, with centers in every city Nationwide to perform these tests. To conduct the test, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is generally required from the crown or body. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair assessment solutions.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly involved hair follicle assessments. Numerous employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts are now opting for hair over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle assessments are used by those enforcing strict no-drug policies, legal authorities, and probationary subjects. The main advantage of these tests includes their ability to detect drug use over a prolonged period—up to 90 days—via an observed collection process that is nearly impossible to adulterate. However, for assessing drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug intake by encasing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When sampled near the scalp, hair can indicate usage within up to approximately a 90-day timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

Sampling a 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hairs (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields about 100mg, which is optimal for testing and reconfirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is suggested. In cases where scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair is acceptable. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test result in the laboratory comprises four major phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing within a laboratory’s system. This phase ensures the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any other data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary check for substances of abuse. While it is an economical means to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen needs corroboration to hold up in legal proceedings. Presumptively positive samples from Screening necessitate further verification.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is taken from the initial batch and readied for Extraction. This phase involves extracting substances from hair in substantially lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Positive screening outcomes are confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo cleansing before confirmation as appropriate. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is subjected to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly unlikely, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Tracks historical usage: It highlights a pattern of drug use over a duration, not just recent intake.

Drawbacks:

  • No detection of recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
