Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Sea Breeze, North Carolina. Whether you require drug or alcohol hair testing, we are experts in hair assessments, boasting facilities across the nation, ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body are necessary. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing requirements.

Recently, drug testing practices have increasingly adopted hair follicle assessments. Various employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle evaluations are preferred by firms with strict no-drug policies and legal or probationary authorities. The key advantage of a hair test is its extensive detection span of up to 90 days, collected under observed conditions, making it highly secure. However, for drug use detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain unmatched in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

The perception of hair testing as an effective means to identify drug and alcohol consumption has grown. Hair acts as a historical record for drugs and alcohol by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. By collecting hair closest to the scalp, a detection timeframe of up to around 90 days for drugs and alcohol is feasible. Its collection is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and simple to transport.

A section of 1.5 inches comprising approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for evaluation and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for measuring the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. Reference to head hair specifies scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test analysis comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the sample's preliminary processing within the lab's system. Essential tasks include confirming the sample's proper sealing and transportation, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for abuse substances. Although it economically eliminates drug use in most samples, positive findings necessitate confirmation for court validity. Samples testing presumptive positive during Screening require a further confirmation step.

In the event of a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted and prepared for the Extraction phase. This phase entails extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than seen in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to hair drug testing's methodological complexities.

Confirmation of any positive results occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a briefer detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, thus enhancing result reliability.
  • Shows usage trends: It indicates a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Lacks detection of recent use: Drugs become identifiable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug testing is costlier than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though termed as "hair follicle tests", this test examines the strand of hair and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
