Providing comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Sedalia, North Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing stands out. Whether for drug or alcohol tests, they excel in hair testing, offering centers nationwide, equipped to handle it. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. Hair tests effectively analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom testing options.

More recently, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly popular for drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair tests over urine tests. These tests suit zero-tolerance workplaces, legal systems, and probation scenarios, offering a significant advantage with their 90-day detection window, reliable observed collection, and resistance to tampering. Yet, for detecting recent usage, within 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a compelling method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers a prolonged timeline of substance use history by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. Upon collection near the scalp, hair can reveal up to about a 90-day detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is easy, relatively hard to tamper with, and shipping it is straightforward.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable to a #2 pencil's size) closest to the scalp provides 100mg, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If head hair isn't available, an equivalent body hair quantity can be collected. In context, head hair refers solely to scalp hair, while body hair signifies all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary four steps in lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning constitutes the primary processing of a specimen into a lab system, entailing confirmation of proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as an initial swift assessment for drug abuse. While Screening efficiently rules out drug use in many samples, a positive screening must be verified to be court-admissible. Samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For presumptively positive samples in the Screening phase, additional hair is drawn from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, substances are isolated from hair at far lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluids), which accounts for the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing if required before confirmation. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days past, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical perspective: Hair tests can depict a pattern of substance use over periods, not just single instances.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: It requires roughly 5-7 days for substances to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur greater costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Inconsistencies in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual growth variations can influence metabolite concentrations.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand, excluding the root beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
