In Skippers Corner, North Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug assessments. Specialized in hair drug and alcohol detection, our centers across the nation, including Skippers Corner, SC, can execute these tests. Generally, hair on the head or body ranging from 1.5 to 2 inches suffices for the analysis. Results can cater to drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing services.

Hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in recent years for detecting substances. Employers, courts, and professionals working in Substance Abuse increasingly require hair tests over urine tests. Their preference is due to the longer detection period of up to 90 days, limited opportunities for tampering, and observed sampling process. Yet, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine testing still retains its precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides an extended record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair's fibers. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to around three months for detecting alcohol and drugs. Collection of hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to send.

A sample of approximately 1.5 inches from around 200 strands of hair (about the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the hair sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. When we reference head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other types of hair (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

Laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary processing of a sample within the laboratory system. This step involves ensuring the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening constitutes an initial swift examination for drugs of misuse. While Screening provides a cost-efficient method for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples indicated as presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample registers as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is sourced from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from the hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screen outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary. The complete laboratory progression from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and certified to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug consumption for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter window.
  • Hard to falsify: It is challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a usage pattern over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
