In South Gastonia, NC, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. For those needing hair or alcohol tests, our specialization in hair testing is noticeable, with accessible centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body is required. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized hair analysis options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly common in drug testing procedures. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals tend to prefer these tests over traditional urine tests. They are favored by organizations with strict drug policies, legal courts, and probationary institutions. The key advantage is a longer detection period, up to 90 days, which makes it difficult to tamper with. Urine tests, however, remain the best choice for detecting recent use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol use. This technique offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug activity by encapsulating biomarkers in the strands of hair as they grow. When sampling close to the scalp, hair can reflect up to about a 3-month period for drug and alcohol detection. It is easy to collect, relatively tamper-proof, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) near the scalp yields around 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirming results. If testing for EtG, additional panels, or more than 10-panel tests, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. If head hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used instead. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four essential steps in the laboratory process of achieving a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the process of introducing a sample into a lab’s system. This includes ensuring the sample's seal is intact, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and capturing any extra data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for potential drug use. While Screening is cost-efficient for dismissing drug use in numerous samples, any positive findings here must be confirmed to be acceptable legally. All samples that test preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Assuming a sample indicates a positive result during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for further analysis in the Extraction process. Here, drugs are extracted at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), highlighting why hair drug testing is the most intricate methodology.

Confirmation of any preliminary positive result is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS analysis. Any samples confirmed to be presumptively positive are washed beforehand if necessary. The full laboratory procedure, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is scrutinized under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a brief detection period.
  • Hard to tamper with: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides usage history: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, not just instances of recent use.

Limitations:

  • Not suitable for recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentrations in hair can vary based on factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates.

Note: Despite often being dubbed "hair follicle tests," the assessment actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Trumps Urine Testing in South Gastonia, NC is clear through its unmatched detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests analyze a broader spectrum of substances, offering a detailed assessment unlike traditional urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
