In Spear, NC, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. For those in need of drug or alcohol hair tests, our expertise extends nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body are required. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide customizable testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a preferred method over traditional urine tests. This shift is driven by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals who favor it for zero-tolerance and probationary monitoring. Hair tests are preferred for their longer detection window, up to 90 days, and an observed, tamper-resistant collection process. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the go-to for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as a potent means to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When clipped near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair sampling is straightforward, relatively tough to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximating the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample is recommended. Should scalp hair be absent, an equivalent amount of body hair might be obtained. References to head hair imply scalp hair exclusively, whereas body hair refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in laboratory drug test result processing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning constitutes the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s framework. This encompasses confirming the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial rapid assessment for drugs of misuse. While Screening economizes on ruling out drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for judicial admissibility. Samples indicating presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation process.

If a sample yields a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. At this point, drugs are isolated from hair at substantially lower concentrations than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex technique to conduct.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating presumptive positivity undergo a wash before confirmation as essential. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines alongside the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that possess a shorter detection duration.
  • Challenging to tamper with: Hair drug tests are very difficult to manipulate, ensuring more precise results.
  • Yields historical insight: It offers a record of drug use over time, beyond recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Fails to capture recent consumption: Drugs need about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur greater costs than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Even though commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test itself analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests in Spear, NC, the former emerges superior due to its elevated accuracy and dependability. Hair tests offer longer detection periods, capturing a more comprehensive history of substance use.

Unlike urine tests, which can be influenced by short-term factors, hair tests provide a clearer picture of consistent usage, making them a valuable tool for employers and other authorities seeking thorough drug use assessments.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Spear, NC, offers a significant advantage by covering a detection window of up to 90 days. This extended timeframe provides a detailed look into an individual's substance use habits, making it ideal for employers wanting a complete view of an applicant or employee's drug history.

By allowing a retrospective analysis of drug consumption, hair testing provides a more stable indication of habitual use, which is invaluable in long-term risk assessments and monitoring scenarios.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Spear, NC, hair follicle tests are favored for their tamper-resistant nature. These tests significantly reduce the potential for sample manipulation, providing results that are both reliable and beyond dispute.

This robustness against adulteration is crucial for maintaining the integrity of drug testing processes, ensuring that outcomes are reflective of true substance use patterns without the risk of falsification.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
