Accredited Drug Testing in Spencer Mountain, NC offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our team specializes in this area, with local centers across the nation equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, a sample is taken from hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches on the crown of your head or body. Our hair analyses can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become the preferred method among employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals, replacing the conventional urine tests. This shift is due to its extensive detection period, lasting up to 90 days, making it the testing method of choice for those enforcing zero-tolerance policies. The sample collection is observed, ensuring accuracy and preventing tampering. However, for detecting drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain more reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair archives a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within its growing fibers. By collecting hair close to the scalp, it can reflect a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively adultery-resistant, and easy to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches of roughly 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg is advised. It’s recommended to use a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equal quantity of body hair can be gathered. Head hair specifically refers to the scalp, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for drug test results involves four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data input not furnished by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial swift check for drug abuse. Though Screening is a cost-effective method to dismiss drug use across most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be admissible in legal proceedings. Presumptive positives from Screening need a secondary corroboration.

For samples presumptively positive at Screening, further hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. At this stage, drug extraction from hair occurs at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most complex to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples presumptive positive are washed before confirmation, if necessary. The total lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analysis can trace drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have shorter detection spans.
  • Challenge to falsify: It's highly difficult to falsify hair drug tests, thus providing more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It illustrates a historical pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • No recent use detection: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is often more costly than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
