Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Spindale, North Carolina. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with facilities across Nationwide cities ready to conduct the test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is needed. Hair screenings evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specified options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have shifted towards hair follicle tests more often. Numerous employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair over urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, legal bodies, and probation clients use hair tests. The main advantage is the prolonged detection time for drug use, up to 90 days, ensuring an accurate observed collection and reducing chances of tampering. Urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a long-term account of substance use by trapping biomarkers within the fiber of hair as it grows. When cut near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection history for alcohol and drugs spanning up to about three months. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion containing roughly 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil) taken from nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, collecting 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. In referring to head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial entry of a sample into the lab’s system. This process includes checking the sample's seal and shipping integrity, issuing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and conducting any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for drug substances. Though cost-efficient for ruling out drug presence in most samples, a positive result in Screening must be validated to be court-acceptable. Any samples that produce a presumptive positive result in Screening need secondary confirmation.

If a sample yields a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing particularly complex.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptively positive samples are cleaned before confirmation if needed. The entire laboratory sequence, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair requirements and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug assessments can detect substance use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Increased difficulty in circumventing: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, leading to more accurate findings.
  • Offers historical insight: It delivers a drug usage pattern over time, not just recent consumption details.

Limitations:

  • Inability to capture recent intake: It usually takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments typically incur higher costs compared to other testing forms.
  • Result fluctuations: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In the context of Spindale, NC, hair follicle testing distinctly outperforms urine-based tests. While urine tests focus on current substance usage, hair tests offer a broader detection range. Administering hair tests avoids the typical limitations encountered with urine tests, providing a full three-month substance history. This expanded scope benefits organizations, ensuring informed decision-making.

The superiority of hair tests lies in their robust detection reliability. Unlike urine tests, which may result in evasive measures, hair testing is nearly foolproof. These tests provide an indisputable account of an individual's substance use, making them a preferred choice for rigorous analyses.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window is a notable advantage of hair follicle testing in Spindale, NC. Unlike other methods, hair testing offers up to 90 days of retrospective drug use information. This remarkably long window helps employers understand an employee's substance usage patterns over several months, leading to better-informed decisions.

This extensive timeframe provides a more comprehensive view, compared to alternative testing methods. Offering insights into long-term behaviors, hair tests are beneficial for assessing individuals with critical roles, ensuring safety and reliability within the workforce.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing, as seen in Spindale, NC, significantly diminishes the possibility of sample tampering. By design, the test inherently protects against adulteration, creating a highly secure testing environment. Hair samples are less vulnerable to manipulative tactics, unlike other drug testing methods, which can be easily compromised.

The robustness of hair testing offers unrivaled assurance. This method ensures the integrity of results, making them trustworthy for both employers and legal entities. Reliable outcomes support confident decision-making, backed by verifiable evidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
