In Staley, North Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. Specializing in hair screenings, we provide services in various locations nationwide, ensuring easy access for those in need of hair or alcohol evaluations. Typically, a sample length of 1.5 to 2 inches is necessary, with alternatives if needed. This method can analyze a wide range of substances and specific levels of alcohol.

Increasingly popular in recent contexts, the hair follicle drug test now features prominently in various sectors including employment, judicial, and rehabilitation. Favoring these tests over urine samples highlights their longer detection times — up to three months — and secure collection methods. Such tests are sought after by entities enforcing strict drug policies due to their reliability and robustness, especially in reducing manipulation.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as an effective means of identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substance intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When trimmed near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly 90 days for substances like alcohol. Hair sample collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample segment measuring 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and verification. For tests exceeding 10 panels, EtG or additional tests, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a similar quantity of body hair may be gathered. When referring to head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory procedure is comprised of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial intake of a sample into a lab's system. This step includes confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input that an electronic chain of custody system might lack.

Screening involves an initial swift test for drug presence. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient method to rule out drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be valid for legal purposes. Samples that yield a presumptive positive during Screening necessitate a further confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are drawn out from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other tests (like urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is deemed the most intricate to perform.

Verification of any positive result from screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed as needed before confirmation. The complete process from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and accreditation with ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug intake for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, which enhances the accuracy of results.
  • Reveals historical patterns: It provides an overview of drug usage over time, going beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair testing outshines traditional urine testing in Staley, NC, offering superior detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair tests can reveal drug use over an extended period, providing a more comprehensive view of an individual's substance history. This long-term insight is invaluable to employers, courts, and other stakeholders needing accurate assessments.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle tests in Staley, NC, provides insightful substance histories up to 90 days. This long-term analysis gives employers detailed evaluations of current or prospective employees' drug use, offering a broader overview than typical procedures. A longer detection time means a more robust screening for consistent substance abuse patterns.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Staley, NC, hair follicle testing offers a tamper-resistant approach, minimizing the risk of sample adulteration. Unlike other methods susceptible to manipulation, hair samples provide a reliable and definitive record of substance use, ensuring testing integrity. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
