Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Stanleyville, North Carolina. If you're in need of testing for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair-based evaluations, and we have facilities across all cities nationwide to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is necessary. Hair analysis can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing schemes.

Recently, the shift toward drug detection has predominantly involved hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair testing over conventional urine methods. Hair follicle tests are crucial for companies with strict anti-drug policies, judicial matters, and probation supervision. Their main advantage is detecting drug use over a longer window, up to 90 days, under observed conditions, making tampering almost impossible. However, for identifying recent drug use, within a 5-day range, urine tests remain precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended overview of alcohol and other drug use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of the developing hair. Collecting hair near the scalp allows for up to a 3-month observation window for alcohol and drug detection. Hair collection is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Employ a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn't obtainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair categories (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The crucial phases of laboratory processing for a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a specimen is introduced into a lab's system. This step checks if the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary inspection for substances of abuse. While being a budget-friendly approach to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be valid in legal scenarios. Samples with presumed positive results during Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and set for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are drawn from hair at much reduced levels than in other practices (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most challenging methods to undertake.

Verification of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive outcomes are cleansed before confirmation based on requirements. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug exams can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine exams with a shorter detection window.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can showcase a pattern of drug usage over a timeframe, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be observable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations are usually pricier compared to other drug testing modalities.
  • Inconsistencies in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests in Stanleyville, NC, the advantages of hair testing are clear. Hair tests offer long-lasting accuracy and greater detection capabilities, ensuring reliable results. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
