Acclaimed Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Stony Point, North Carolina. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, Acclaimed Drug Testing is proficient in hair assessment, with facilities nationwide ready to perform such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for specific testing needs.

Recently, drug testing practices have increasingly adopted the hair follicle drug test. Employers, judiciary bodies, and substance abuse experts are opting for the hair drug test over traditional urine analyses. Hair follicle tests are preferred by firms with strict anti-drug regulations, legal entities, and individuals on parole. The main advantage of hair analysis is its extensive drug detection range, reaching up to 90 days, conducted under direct observation and highly difficult to tamper with. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has increasingly become recognized as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand, offering a long-term account of alcohol and drug use. When sampled near the scalp, it provides roughly a 3-month window of detection. Collection is straightforward, manipulation is challenging, and shipping is simple.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the ideal amount for initial testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional and/or more than 10-panel tests, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair isn't an option, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. Head hair pertains exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in the lab encompasses four major stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary integration of a sample into the lab system. It entails ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipping, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective means to eliminate drug use in most samples, positive screen results must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Presumptive positive samples from Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is gathered from the initial sample for Extraction preparation. In this phase, drug concentrations are extracted at significantly lower levels than in other methodologies (for example, urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing as the most challenging methodology.

Positive outcomes from screenings are verified via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples showing presumptive positivity undergo washing before confirmation, as deemed necessary. The lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, compared to the shorter span of urine tests.
  • Difficult to falsify: Hair drug test results are notably accurate due to the difficulty in cheating them.
  • Historic usage data: Analyzing hair can reveal a timeline of drug use over an extended period, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs only become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Higher cost: In general, hair drug tests incur greater expenses compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual growth variations can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually pertains to the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Testing Outperforms Urine Tests

In Stony Point, NC, hair follicle testing is increasingly favored over urine testing. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
