Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Teachey, North Carolina. For individuals requiring hair tests for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area, providing testing centers throughout the nation, with the ability to conduct hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed to perform tests for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized assessments.

The rise of hair follicle drug tests has become a more predominant method in recent times. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts increasingly prefer hair testing over traditional urine analysis. Hair follicle testing is invaluable for organizations enforcing strict anti-drug policies and for legal or probationary purposes. Its primary advantage is an extended detection window of up to 90 days, captured through a supervised process, rendering it nearly tamper-proof. However, urine testing remains the most reliable method for detecting recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug use. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for testing. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is recommended. We suggest weighing the hair on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four essential steps in the laboratory processing of drug test samples are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial handling of a sample within a lab’s framework. This encompasses confirming that the sample was securely sealed during shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening effectively eliminates drug use in most samples cost-efficiently, a positive screen is further required to be validated for legal proceedings. Any samples that are likely positive in Screening require further verification.

For any sample showing a likely positive in the Screening phase, extra hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a remarkably lower concentration than in other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging approach to execute.

The Confirmation of any favorable screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All likely positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation alongside compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is significantly difficult to bypass a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers usage patterns: It can illustrate a history of drug consumption over time, rather than recent usage only.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to be identified in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
