Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Timberlake, North Carolina. If you require testing for drug or alcohol usage through hair analysis, our company is specifically skilled in this area and has facilities available in all cities across the nation to perform such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can be analyzed. Hair tests cater to drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailor-made testing needs.

The preference for hair follicle drug tests has notably increased in recent years. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now demand hair tests over the conventional urine tests. These are essential for organizations enforcing stringent drug use policies, legal bodies, and those on probation. A key advantage of hair testing is its extended detection period, which can reveal substance use over roughly 90 days, and it is collected under supervision, making it hard to tamper with. However, urine tests remain more suitable for detecting drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a potent resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair maintains a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers in the strands as they grow. When cut close to the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat hard to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) near to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for analysis and validation. For EtG, extensions, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels,130mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale is suggested for measuring the sample. When scalp hair is not available, an equal portion of body hair can be taken. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first stage where a sample is processed into a lab’s system, which includes confirming proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning an additional random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any outstanding data not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. It's a cost-effective measure to exclude drug use in most samples, though any positive screen must be validated for legal use. Any samples appearing positive in Screening require follow-up confirmation.

If a sample exhibits presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample for the Extraction phase. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at more dilute concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging procedure.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • High resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, resulting in more dependable outcomes.
  • Historical information: It provides a timeline of drug use, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of revealing recent usage: Drugs generally become visible in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand rather than the sub-scalp hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Timberlake, NC, hair follicle testing stands superior to traditional urine tests due to its higher detection accuracy and reliability. Whereas urine tests detect recent drug use, hair screenings trace drug and alcohol consumption over extended periods.

Hair testing is less susceptible to tampering, making it a preferred choice among employers and legal entities. This ensures that the historical substance use is accurately reflected, overcoming the limitations of short-term detection in urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

One of the most significant benefits of hair follicle testing in Timberlake, NC, is its expansive detection window, capable of identifying drug use up to 90 days. This feature offers employers a comprehensive overview of an individual’s drug history.

The extended time frame provided by hair testing helps companies make informed decisions based on an applicant or employee's prolonged substance usage, aiding in maintaining a drug-free workplace environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Timberlake, NC, offer a reliable, tamper-resistant methodology that drastically minimizes the risk of sample adulteration. This ensures dependable and unquestionable results for employers and professionals alike.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
