Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Trinity, North Carolina. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area, with facilities available in cities across the nation ready to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary from the crown or elsewhere on the body. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

The practice of drug testing has increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests in recent years. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair tests over standard urine analyses due to their advantages. Organizations with strict anti-drug policies, as well as courts and probationary services, opt for hair follicle tests. The main advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window for drug use—up to 90 days—and its nearly tamper-proof observation process, although urine tests remain more precise for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a notable technique for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal up to about a three-month detection timeframe for substances. It is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to alter, and conveniently transported.

Collecting a 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, deemed the optimal sample size for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or screens above ten panels, 150mg of the hair is suggested. We advise using a jeweler's scale to weigh the hair. If no scalp hair is available, an equal volume of body hair can be collected. Reference to head hair implies only scalp hair. Body hair refers inclusively to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary handling of a sample in a laboratory’s framework. This entails ensuring the sample was securely sealed and appropriately dispatched, designating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any further data entry not accomplished by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for abuse drugs. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss substance usage on most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court eligibility. Any samples that appear positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample appears positive during Screening, more hair is taken from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of conducting hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All potential positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, compared to urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: Altering the results of a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring higher accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It offers an outline of drug use over an extended period, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing is typically more costly than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration levels in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination is actually of the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
