Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Valle Crucis, North Carolina. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our specialization in hair testing ensures we have centers throughout the entire country, all capable of conducting these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Tests are available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing solutions.

In more recent times, drug testing protocols have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse experts demand a hair test instead of the typical urine test. These tests are sought by employers adhering to strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and those under probationary conditions. The main advantage of a hair follicle test is its considerably longer detection window, which extends to 90 days, facilitated by an observed collection process, making it extremely hard to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within the preceding 5 days, urine tests reign as the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for spotting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the shaft of the growing hair. When extracted from the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol usage for up to roughly three months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will amount to 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for testing. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair should be collected. We suggest measuring the hair sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a similar volume of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, this strictly refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The comprehensive steps in processing a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first phase where the sample is logged into the lab system. This involves checking the sample’s sealing and shipment integrity, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary examination for substance abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly way to identify drug use in most samples, any positive result must be confirmed for legal acceptability. Samples showing positive indicators in Screening need further confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the sample for Extraction. During this step, compounds are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than other techniques (such as urine or saliva), highlighting hair drug testing as the most intricate methodology.

Confirmation of any preliminary positive result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples indicating positive results are cleansed as necessary before confirmation. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and also complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug testing identifies drug consumption over a 90-day period, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Challenge to deceive: Manipulating a hair drug test is significantly difficult, thus ensuring more authentic results.
  • Offers historical insight: It indicates a timeline of substance use, unlike recent-only usage detection.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: A delay of approximately 5-7 days occurs before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to alternative testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Attributes like hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the testing is performed on the hair shaft rather than the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to conventional urine testing in Valle Crucis, NC, the advantages are clear. Hair tests provide superior detection accuracy, identifying long-term substance use patterns. Unlike urine tests, susceptible to short windows of detection, hair follicle tests offer a broader overview, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of an individual’s drug use history.

Employers in Valle Crucis who prioritize effective drug screening often favor hair testing over urine testing. The extended detection window and difficulty in circumventing the test make hair follicle testing a preferred choice. This method’s reliability and higher accuracy rate are instrumental for maintaining zero-tolerance policies within organizations.

Extended Detection Window

In Valle Crucis, NC, the extended detection window of hair follicle testing offers a significant advantage. Unlike other methods, this test can detect drug use up to 90 days prior, providing a fuller picture of an individual’s substance history. This extensive timeframe is crucial for employers seeking an in-depth understanding of their employees’ or potential hires’ practices.

The longer detection window in hair follicle testing is particularly valuable in Valle Crucis. Allowing for a comprehensive assessment, it aids employers in making informed decisions about current staff and incoming talent. This broad detection range sets hair testing apart, ensuring a thorough evaluation of substance use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
