Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Varnamtown, North Carolina. Specializing in hair testing for drugs and alcohol, we have facilities across the nation equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. Our hair tests can assess substances including drugs and alcohol/ETG, along with personalized testing solutions.

The trend toward using hair follicle tests for drug screening has been growing. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle testing is favored by employers with strict drug-free policies, judicial bodies, and probation programs due to its extended detection window—up to 90 days—via an observed collection, making it extremely hard to falsify. Yet, for recent drug use, under five days, urine tests remain more reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term evidence of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the hair as it grows. When clipped near the scalp, hair offers up to a 3-month window of detection for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A sample measurement of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or tests beyond 10 panels, a higher amount of 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair can include any other types (such as facial and underarm hair).

Process Overview

The four essential steps in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially integrated into the lab’s system. This process verifies the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and complements any missing data that the electronic chain of custody system does not provide.

Screening consists of a preliminary evaluation for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly means to eliminate drug usage for most samples, a positive result requires Confirmation for court admission. All samples that exhibit potential positivity during Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

When a sample indicates positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are removed from hair at concentrations much lower than those in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), emphasizing the challenging nature of hair drug testing.

Verification of positive screening outcomes occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples showing a possible positive are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analysis can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a narrower time frame.
  • Difficult to tamper: Hair drug testing is challenging to manipulate, leading to more reliable results.
  • Reveals past use: Provides a timeline of drug use across an extended duration, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Approximately 5-7 days are required for drugs to become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analysis generally incurs higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Factors such as hair color and individual growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the scalp-embedded follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
