Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Waves, NC. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our centers are available nationwide, specializing in hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffices. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts prefer this over standard urine tests. Zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and probation cases utilize this method, which boasts a detection period of up to 90 days and is nearly foolproof against tampering. For detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests retain superior accuracy.

What it is, How it works

The analysis of hair has grown to be regarded as an effective means for the identification of drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can capture a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by sealing biomarkers in the strands of the hair as it grows. When retrieved near the scalp, hair can deliver roughly a three-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and uncomplicated to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of about 200 strands of hair (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for both screening and verification. For EtG, supplemental tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't an option, an equivalent amount of body hair may be utilized. When indicating head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure of laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four central stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves preliminarily integrating the sample into the laboratory’s framework. This means ensuring the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves conducting an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to eliminate up to 90% of samples testing negative for drugs, any positive indication necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

If a sample evidences a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is pulled from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening among the most challenging methods to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is accomplished via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests detect drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: It is challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, thereby ensuring accuracy.
  • Provides usage patterns: It can illustrate a history of drug consumption, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative methods.
  • Results variability: Hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the scalp follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
