Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in West Canton, NC. If you're in need of a thorough hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we have centers Nationwide ready to assist. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on either the crown of the head or body is usually required. Hair samples can be checked for substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG or customized options.

Over the years, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a popular method for drug testing. This is due in part to employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals favoring hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair testing is preferred in environments enforcing zero-tolerance for drugs, such as in workplaces, court systems, and for individuals on probation. Its main advantage is that it can detect drug use over a prolonged period, up to 90 days, making it difficult to tamper with. Although, for recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a timeline of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When hair is sampled near the scalp, it can detect the presence of alcohol and drugs for about three months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

An optimal sample comprises a 1.5-inch segment with approximately 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil in thickness) near the scalp, yielding 100mg, suitable for initial and confirmatory testing. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, and those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accuracy in measuring the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. The term "head hair" refers strictly to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test result in a laboratory encompasses four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary processing of a sample into the laboratory's system, which includes confirming the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not captured by an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result must be substantiated to be used in legal contexts. Samples that yield a presumptively positive result in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample display a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this stage, substances are drawn out from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is considered one of the most complex methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is under the review of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and maintained according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Successfully cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring higher accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent intake: Drugs become traceable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests in West Canton, NC, it's clear why the former is often preferred. Hair testing offers superior detection accuracy and reliability, detecting substances used over a longer period. This advantage provides a more comprehensive view, unlike urine tests, which only reflect recent drug use, making hair testing an invaluable tool for maintaining safety and compliance.

Extended Detection Window

The ability of hair follicle testing to detect substance use over an extended duration, up to 90 days, provides a significant advantage in West Canton, NC. This long-term detection helps employers gain insight into an applicant or employee's drug use history, ensuring they make informed decisions. Such extended windows are invaluable for maintaining a drug-free environment and ensuring the safety of all employees.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
