Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in White Oak, NC. Whether it's for drug or alcohol detection, our centers nationwide, including all cities, conduct specialized hair tests. Typically, a sample requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head, though body hair is also used. These tests screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other custom options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in drug screening. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance professionals now prefer these tests over standard urinalysis. They are popular among employers with strict no-drug policies, legal entities, and those on probation. Their advantage lies in a prolonged detection timeline of up to 90 days, with an observable collection ensuring precision and resistance to tampering. However, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended-term overview of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can supply up to about a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and substances. Collection of hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels beyond 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair pertains to other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in processing a drug test in the laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory’s workflow. This entails confirming the sample’s seal and proper shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient strategy to rule out drug usage on most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Any samples presumptively positive during Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this process, drugs are drawn from hair at much lower concentrations than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The whole laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While often described as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in White Oak, NC

Compared to traditional urine tests, hair follicle testing offers superior detection and reliability. Urine tests may detect recent use, but hair tests provide a broader detection window. Employers seeking zero-tolerance policies benefit from the longer detection period offered by hair testing, capturing usage patterns not caught by urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing provides an extended detection window in White Oak, NC, monitoring drug use for up to 90 days. This extended period offers employers a thorough overview of an individual's substance history. Such comprehensive insights benefit employers in making well-informed decisions regarding current or prospective employees.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In White Oak, NC, hair follicle tests offer a tamper-resistant testing method that minimizes the risk of sample adulteration. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
