Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Woodfin, North Carolina. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, we excel in these evaluations and offer facilities for testing throughout cities across the Nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Hair tests can reveal drugs, the presence of alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become more prevalent in drug testing protocols. Increasingly, employers, judicial bodies, and those involved in Substance Abuse programs are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probationary conditions favor hair follicle drug testing due to its extended detection window—usually up to 90 days—along with directly monitored collection reducing fraud. For drug use within the last five days, however, urine tests still hold a slight edge in precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers of a growing hair strand encapsulate biomarkers, thus offering an extended insight into alcohol and other drug histories. Hair samples, when cut near the scalp, can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to approximately 90 days. Additionally, hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch sample of nearly 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) proximate to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, suitable for both screening and confirmation. However, for EtG, add-ons, and/or tests that exceed 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the sample. If no scalp hair is available, a similar quantity of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, not other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory evaluation of a drug test result consists of four major phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning constitutes entering a sample into a laboratory’s system for initial processing. Tasks include validating the sample's seal and shipment, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any ancillary data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as a preliminary rapid assessment for drug abuse. While being a cost-efficient method to discount drug use in most samples, positive Screening results necessitate confirmation for legal admittance. Any samples hinting at positive results in Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

When Screening suggests positivity, more hair is taken from the main sample for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at minimal concentrations compared to alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence making hair drug screening the most intricate to execute.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. If warranted, all samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed before Confirmation. The entire lab procedure, ranging from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection span: Hair drug tests cover drug usage for as long as 90 days, while urine tests feature a reduced detection period.
  • Challenges in deceit: It is quite challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Delivers historical insights: It reveals a timeline of drug usage, not just recent occurrences.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs appear in hair approximately 5-7 days after usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result discrepancies: Factors like hair coloration and personal growth variations can influence the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite frequently being labeled as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is performed on the hair strand rather than on the underlying hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
