In Braddock, North Dakota, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in both drug and alcohol tests, our centers span all major cities nationwide. Most cases require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair for accurate analysis. Testing options include screening for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and customized needs.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity. A growing number of employers, court systems, and substance abuse specialists recommend it over traditional urine tests. This method appeals especially to those upholding strict drug-free policies due to its extended detection period of up to 90 days, reliable collection process, and resistance to tampering attempts. However, for drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an essential method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands maintain a prolonged record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands. When extracted near the scalp, hair can potentially offer a detection period extending up to 90 days for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, moderately challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample, approximately 200 strands (similar in width to a #2 pencil), when taken nearest the scalp yields 100mg, optimal for initial screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample weight. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair is deemed acceptable. Scalp hair refers solely to head hair; whereas body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

Drug test laboratory procedures consist predominantly of four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning focuses on the sample's initial integration into the laboratory system. It includes ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any additional entries absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening conducts a preliminary rapid assessment for substance misuse. Although cost-efficient for excluding drug usage in most samples, a Screening positive requires verification for legal admissibility. Samples indicating positivity in Screening necessitate further validation.

For a sample indicating potential positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. In this phase, substances are isolated from the hair at a reduced concentration relative to other methods (e.g., urine, oral fluid), highlighting the intricate nature of hair drug testing.

Verification of any positive Screening result occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All samples suspected positive are cleansed before confirmation if required. A comprehensive review of the laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection span: Hair drug tests extend detection up to three months, contrasting with the shorter span of urine tests.
  • Cheating deterrent: The rigorous nature of hair drug testing renders result manipulation difficult, enhancing accuracy.
  • Chronology of usage: Provides an extended timeline of drug consumption, not limited merely to current use.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection lag: Drugs may take around 5-7 days to become evident in hair.
  • Expense: The cost of hair drug testing generally surpasses other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variations might influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis centers on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
