Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Enderlin, North Dakota. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing covers all cities across the nation, allowing us to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body can be used. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other options.

Recently, drug testing has increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by organizations with strict no-drug policies and are used by courts and individuals on probation. Their main advantage is the extended detection period for substance use, generally up to 90 days, during an observed collection that is difficult to tamper with. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, the urine test remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term evidence of alcohol and drugs by sequestering biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When sampled close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 hair strands (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is advised to weigh the sample with a jeweler's scale. If no scalp hair is present, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be taken. References to head hair mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory system. This step confirms the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any missing data not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, cost-effective check for drugs of abuse. Though Screening can effectively rule out drug use in most cases, any positive results need confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening need subsequent confirmation.

In instances where a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is sourced from the original specimen for Extraction. This stage extracts drugs from the hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why performing hair drug testing is considered the most challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation, as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests, which have shorter detection periods.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is fairly challenging, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Supports historical data: Provides a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing generally incurs greater expenses than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Variability in outcomes: Variances such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the actual analysis concerns the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
