In Flasher, North Dakota, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in this field, with centers across all major cities in the United States equipped to conduct these tests. It's typically required to have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or elsewhere as an alternative. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other substances.

More recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle analysis. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse counselors often prefer hair tests over conventional urine ones. Hair follicle assessments are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The chief advantage of a hair follicle analysis is its extended detection period, usually up to 90 days, with a supervised collection process and being almost cheat-proof. Nonetheless, to detect drug use within a 5-day window, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely regarded as an effective method for detecting alcohol and drug usage. Hair offers an extended history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When collected close to the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug presence for up to a 3-month period. Hair is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, add-ons, and/or panels beyond 10, 150mg of the hair sample is advised. It's recommended to weigh the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we solely refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary steps of processing a sample into the lab’s system. This encompasses confirming proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any other data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for it to hold up in court. Samples with presumptively positive results in Screening are required to undergo a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptively positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. At this point, drugs are extracted from hair at a substantially lower concentration than when using other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging method to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation complies with both the standards of the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection timeframe: Hair drug tests allow for the detection of drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have limited detection periods.
  • Hard to counterfeit: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing the accuracy of outcomes.
  • Historical insights: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time rather than just recent trends.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Drugs typically become detected in hair about 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result fluctuations: Elements such as hair color and individual growth patterns can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
