In Flaxton, North Dakota, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings. Specializing in this testing method for substances and alcohol, our nationwide centers can conduct hair tests in any city. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

The popularity of hair follicle drug testing has surged recently. Organizations like employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often favor this over standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies and probation systems rely on it due to its extended detection window of up to 90 days and the monitored collection process. While it's hard to tamper with, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It captures a comprehensive historical record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's growing fibers. When extracted near the scalp, hair samples can reveal drug and alcohol usage over roughly a 3-month period. Collecting hair is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising approximately 200 hair strands (akin in size to a #2 pencil) from nearest the scalp offers 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and validation. For EtG tests and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's suggested to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent sum of body hair can be used. References to head hair strictly concern scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test result involves four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of integrating a sample into a lab's framework. This stage includes the confirmation that the sample is properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data recording not covered by an electronic chain of custody procedure.

Screening is a preliminary rapid test for substance use. Although it is an economical method for eliminating drug consumption in most samples, a positive finding requires validation to be legally acceptable. Any samples indicating potential positivity in Screening necessitate a further confirmation.

Should a sample appear positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and processed for Extraction. During this process, substances are extracted from hair at concentrations lower than seen in other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Any positive screening outcomes undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with potential positive results are pre-cleansed before confirmation as necessitated. The complete laboratory sequence, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is in compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal substance use for a duration of up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection span.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Hair drug tests are challenging to deceive, thus improving result reliability.
  • Offers retrospective insight: This test provides insight into drug consumption patterns over time, rather than solely focusing on recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs typically take 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally costlier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", this examination evaluates the hair strand itself rather than the underlying hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
