Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Fort Clark, North Dakota. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair testing, with centers across all major cities nationwide. For most cases, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a popular method. It's favored by employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts over traditional urine tests. Typically used by organizations with zero-tolerance policies and courts, hair follicle tests provide a longer detection window of up to 90 days. Conducted under supervision, they are hard to manipulate, though for recent drug usage, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are now recognized as an effective method for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug use up to around a 3-month timeframe. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch hair segment of roughly 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair is a suitable alternative. Concerning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. All other hair types (such as facial and axillary hair) are considered body hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four crucial steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the initial phase, where a sample is entered into a laboratory's system. This process includes confirming that the sample was securely sealed and correctly shipped, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry that wasn't provided via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary, rapid check for substance abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly solution to dismiss drug usage for most samples, a positive result must be validated for it to be legally admissible. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive during Screening, a greater quantity of hair is drawn from the original sample and set for Extraction. During this phase, substances are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration than in other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing particularly challenging to conduct.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a presumptive positive are cleansed before confirmation when necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory process aligns with both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter window of detection.
  • Resistant to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is highly unlikely, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Chronological records: It delivers an overview of drug use patterns over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become evident in the hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Aspects such as hair color and individual hair growth differences may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently named "hair follicle tests", the analysis considers the hair strand, not the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle and urine tests, the former excels in several aspects, especially in Fort Clark. Hair testing offers a longer detection period, capturing past drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a much shorter window. This advantage provides a clearer picture of an individual's substance use history.

Hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests in accuracy and reliability. The extended detection window and reduced potential for result manipulation make it a superior choice for employers in Fort Clark, seeking thorough drug testing solutions.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing is known for its extended detection window, covering up to 90 days of prior drug use. This method gives employers in Fort Clark a comprehensive view of an individual's substance use history, offering invaluable insights during the hiring or monitoring process.

The advantage of a longer detection period helps employers make informed decisions. With hair follicle testing, Fort Clark businesses can evaluate an individual's long-term drug use patterns, promoting a drug-free workplace culture.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
