In Gwinner, North Dakota, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If a hair or alcohol test is needed, we specialize in hair testing with centers across all U.S. cities capable of performing these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or body is needed. Our hair tests evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific testing requirements.

Recently, the hair follicle drug test has become a more routine method for drug screening. This test is preferred by many employers, courts, and addiction professionals over the urine test. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation utilize it. Its main benefit is the extended detection window for drug usage of up to 90 days, collected during an observed process, and it is highly cheat-resistant. For detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, the urine test remains the best option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair offers an extended account of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the growing strand. When gathered near the scalp, it can detect alcohol and drugs up to roughly three months. Hair is easy to gather, relatively challenging to alter, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 strands close to the scalp, yields 100mg, the optimal amount for analysis. For EtG, additional options, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. It's advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair is acceptable. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key stages in processing a drug test outcome in the laboratory encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample within the lab. This entails confirming the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry absent from an electronic custody system.

Screening entails an initial brief review for illicit substances. While Screening is a cost-effective method for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive screen mandates confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples preliminarily positive during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is preliminarily positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples preliminarily positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests ascertain drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a reduced detection timeframe.
  • Resistant to tampering: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical patterns: Capable of illustrating a pattern of drug use over a duration, not just recent activity.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot trace recent intake: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the procedure actually evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
