At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Hague, North Dakota. Whether it's for drugs or alcohol, our specialty in hair testing ensures reliable results, supported by our nationwide network of testing centers. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Hair tests are able to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored to suit specific testing requirements.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity in recent years as a preferred method for various organizations. Employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists often opt for this over urine tests. These tests are especially favored by companies with zero-tolerance policies and authorities dealing with probation cases, offering a longer detection window reaching up to 90 days, collected under supervision, and minimizing the chance of manipulation. However, for recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as a strong mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The strands of hair capture biomarkers, providing a long-term record of substance use. When gathered near the scalp, it can reveal up to a 3-month period of drug or alcohol consumption. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A segment of hair measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of approximately 200 hairs, akin to the girth of a #2 pencil, yields a 100mg sample, which is perfect for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is necessary. It's advisable to weigh the hair on a jeweler's scale. In instances where scalp hair isn't available, equivalent body hair may be used. Scalp hair refers strictly to hair on the head, whereas body hair includes all other hair kinds (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory processing includes four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed within the laboratory system. This step assures the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any other necessary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial fast check for drug abuse. It is cost-effective for excluding drug usage in most cases, but a positive screen must undergo confirmation for legal acceptance. Presumptively positive samples in Screening must be confirmed through further testing.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. It is at this stage that drugs are separated from hair at concentrations much lower than other testing methods (e.g., urine or saliva), which is why hair drug testing is among the most challenging methods.

Positive Screening outcomes are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, presumptive positive samples undergo washing if required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is audited according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can track substance use for as long as 90 days, surpassing the shorter period observed in urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Due to the difficulty in deceiving a hair drug test, results are typically more reliable.
  • Shows usage patterns: Hair testing reveals drug consumption trends over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Not effective for recent use: Drugs typically take 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Compared to other methods, hair drug testing tends to be more costly.
  • Result variations: Differences like hair color and personal hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests," the procedure evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
