Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Hannaford, North Dakota. As specialists in hair and alcohol testing, we have centers across all U.S. cities. To conduct a hair test, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become more common for drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often choose a hair test over a urine test. Hair tests are preferred by those enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies because they have a longer detection window, up to 90 days, and involve an observed collection process that is difficult to tamper with. However, urine tests are still more effective at detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged timeline of alcohol and other drugs by encasing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a roughly 3-month spectrum of detection for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches long, consisting of roughly 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil), gathered closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for screening and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler's scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we specify scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types such as facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome generally comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a specimen into a lab's system, which includes ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched appropriately, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid check for drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive result needs confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that indicate a presumptive positive during Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If Screening suggests a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (like urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening the toughest methodology to execute.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as required. The overall laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite challenging, rendering the results more reliable.
  • Provides historical data: It can present a usage pattern of drugs over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be noticeable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared to other drug screening techniques.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
